TVSC Barca Take Third in Dublin Cup
The TVSC Barca goal of "improve every game" was true this weekend for Tri Valley SC U10 Boys. Game one, against River City, found us behind most of the game, with not much excitement, ending on the wrong end of 6-1. The second game was a battle against a tough West Coast team. Barca came out passing, moving and playing well, with great performances by Lucas Bevilacqua and Andrew Senna. With the game tied with seconds to go, Tyler Ngyuen took control of the ball, looked up, shot, and the ball clanked off the post and into the back of the net for a 4-3 win!
Sunday morning the Barca played eventual tournament champion Mill Valley in the Semi-Final and lost 6-1, with great performances by Alexander Lemmon and Adam Malek. The Dublin Slammers were our opponent in the consolation game. The boys came out excited to be playing for a medal and they definitely earned one. Ryan Herrington was on fire! Ethan Mcuen owned the middle, and Maxwell Rector and Nick van der Waart van Gulik were dominating the flanks in a 4-2 exciting finish.
Great job by the TVSC Barca and Coach Todd Higley!

TVSC Real Champions of Soccer By The Bay!
A Championship dedicated to Lisa Weekes.
Team Real's season got off to a flying start in perfect August conditions at its first tournament of the 2011-12 campaign.
Real stamped its authority on the competition in the first game against Madera Roja FC Milan with a decisive 3-1 win. A superb first half led to a goal by Juan Alfaro, and two by Lorren Son. Fullback Cody Martinez probed forward well, and midfielders Marco Nolasco and Hector Perez controlled proceedings in the center. Against San Carlos Flames, in the second pool game, Real recorded a 3-0 win. Central defender Ryan Gollott was again dominant in the air, with Alexander Cairel, Noah Garner, and Lucas Hasselfeld providing width and power. Goals were provided by Hasselfeld and Alfaro added another two. With the championship game as the prize, Real left no questions unanswered in the last pool game. East Bay rival Mustang Spartans were soundly defeated 4-0. Tim Wraith earned another fine shut out in goal. Jack Lamont snuffed out wide threats from full back and provided good distribution to Tyler Ellis who constantly surged forward into dangerous positions. Antonio Preciado battled for every ball near him and Marcel Scott's industry, up and down the flanks stifled the players in red. An early goal from Alfaro was followed by strikes from Nolasco and Silcox. Silcox's second goal, from a flamboyant diving header, sealed the Tri Valley victory.
Sunday afternoon's championship game matched Real against Peninsula FC Extreme. In the early going, Real struggled to get its ball possession game to flow. The host Club's team took full advantage and quickly slotted home two unanswered goals. Trailing, Real clawed back to 2-2 at half time, thanks to a well constructed and taken goal from Hasselfeld and another from defender Silcox. With both teams tiring, it was Real's spirit that drove them to the title. Despite the constant attentions of the fast and physical Peninsula players, Real clinched the win when striker Nick Menezes prodded home at the far post with just a few minutes of the game remaining. Michael Carlson was unable to play due to injury. The team Real family dedicates its tournament win to the memory of Lisa Weekes.

Lesson’s from Legends
This week the Tri Valley Soccer Club hosted one of the Bay Area’s most recognized soccer personalities for a team training session with the TVSC U11 Boys Celtic team at Live Oak School (Kutscher Field). Mark Demling, a former three time All American at St Louis University and a long time San Jose Earthquake, traveled from St Louis and joined Coach Johnny Moore for a team training session.
Mark was considered one of the top American players in his day, and the Tri Valley SC is very grateful that he took the time to share his wisdom and enthusiasm of the game with the Celtic Boys and families. Our thanks as well to Johnny Moore for getting Demo, as he is affectionately known to TVSC.

A Profile of TVSC’s Guillermo Rivas – “A Very Gifted Player”
Guillermo Rivas is considered one of the most talented players to come out of the East Bay in the past several years. The very likable player has had a significant impact on the game in both the club and interscholastic levels.
Guillermo Rivas is typically considered a dangerous, attack-minded player with great skill and vision. His creative play with the Tri Valley SC Santos U18 team constantly generates opportunities for himself and his teammates. It was his transition to a more defensive role during the high school season with Cal High, however, that helped his team emerge as East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) Champions.
While the defensive midfield role Rivas was asked to play for the Grizzlies this season wasn't a total stretch for his skill set, it did provide it's challenges to the attack-minded senior captain. With a little less freedom in the attack than accustomed to, the senior captain would have to find different ways to make an impact for his team.
Not surprisingly, he found a way to make an impact. While Cal High's success should be attributed to all members of the talented team, it was Rivas' work rate and soccer IQ that was the foundation that allowed everything else to work as needed. Rivas helped anchor the Grizzlies and led them to an undefeated season and an East Bay Athletic League. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies came up just short of winning their first ever North Coast Section final, falling in PKs during the championship match for the second consecutive year.
Additional honors for Guillermo include:
- Cal High Senior Captain
-East Bay Athletic League Co-MVP
- Contra Costa Times All-East Bay Boys Soccer: First Team selection

Tri Valley SC Celtic Capture NorCal Premier League Crown!
The Tri Valley SC U10 Boys Celtic team captured the NorCal Premier League Gold Division title with an outstanding run at the end of the season. The Celtic, led by Coach Johnny Moore and Jim McClusker, dominated league play and finished at the top of the table with Union City. The Celtic had the superior goal difference over Union City, and therefore, earned the title of champions of the league.
The 2010 season had many hi-lights for the young Celtic team, which included convincing wins over perennial powers Ballistic United Gold, Mustang Boca, Lamorinda, Mustang Chelsea and Bay Oaks.
Perhaps the most notable accomplishment of the Celtic was the players’ ability to improve all aspects of their game both on and off the ball. The quality of their game grew substantially, and in the end their efforts were rewarded with the league championship.
Congratulations to the Celtic and coaches Johnny Moore and Jim McClusker!

Tri Valley SC 2010 - A Year in Review!
As 2010 rapidly disappears and 2011 is on the horizon, the Tri Valley Soccer Club looks back at 2010 and the many highlights and accomplishments of our Club.
In 2010, the Club grew to twenty teams and over 400 members, doubling in size over the previous year. We added new staff to our coaching ranks, including US Soccer Hall of Famer Johnny Moore, former English Premier League player and Scottish International Terry Wilson, highly respected coaches Ricardo Salcedo, Imanol Hernandez and Jorge Aguilar, and Major League Soccer star and former US National team member Steve Rammel.
There were many highlights for our teams over the course of the 2010 season. The U11 Boys Teams Inter and Juve, continued to show improvement. The U12 Bayern boys played exceptional soccer at times during the Fall season. Expectations will be high for the Bayern as they move into the U13 age group. The U14 age group had many successes with the U14 Girls Strikers taking 2nd place in NorCal Premier League play and reaching the quarter finals of the Novato Cup. The U14 Boys Galaxy, under the leadership of Ramiro Rodriguez, had two top three tournament finishes and secured 4th place in NorCal Premier League play.
Our senior division teams also enjoyed significant success over the past year. The Arsenal finished in 3rd place in the highly competitive Platinum Division of the NorCal Premier League. The United reached the semi-finals of the Ballistic Summer Classic after winning the cup the previous year. The U18 Boys Santos continues its march to excellence, winning the highly competitive NorCal Premier League Championship for the fall season by outscoring their opponents 45 to 9. Several Santos players are being recruited to play at the collegiate level.
There were numerous highlights off the field of play as well. Our popular Future Stars program doubled in size, and a U6 program was added to accommodate the increasing demand for this type of programing. Our educational programing was expanded to include a new Strength and Conditioning program that was formally introduced during the Spring season. The Club was the first club in California to secure the UEFA TactX player development software. This software has been utilized for the TVSC curriculum development for teams in the U9 through U11 age groups.
As in the previous year, TVSC dedicated a significant amount of resources to provide assistance to families that were experiencing economic hardships. Over 25 players received some type of assistance in 2010.
In December 2010, the 4th Annual Gift of Giving Program kicked off and was a big success. As in the past, the Club always tries to assist those less fortunate in our community. This year, in partnership with the St Joan of Arc Church and the St Vincent de Paul Society of the East Bay, the Tri Valley Soccer Club sponsored three families for Christmas. The response from the membership was overwhelming. Thanks to all who participated!
Last, but certainly not least, a big thank you to the Club’s managers, coaches and volunteers who did an outstanding job in all areas of the Club’s operations. From the Club BBQ to team pictures, from TVSC Merchandising to tryouts, we are very fortunate to have a membership that is so supportive of TVSC. The efforts made by our volunteers helped provide the children of our community with a high quality educational program. The Tri Valley SC U15 Boys Arsenal team returned to the Bay Area last night after a tremendous showing at the prestigious 2010 Las Vegas Mayor's Cup. The Arsenal reached the championship game against a highly rated team from Sinoloa, Mexico. The championship final was an end to end affair with the TVSC Arsenal controlling much of the first half of play. Down 1-0 with a goal against the run of play late in the first half, the Arsenal came out in the second half and continued to pressure the Mexican team forcing the Sinaloa goalkeeper to make several sensational saves. The Sinaloa team took advantage of some very dubious officiating to score two goals late in the match to secure the championship for the U15 Premier Division with the final 3-0.
To reach the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup final, the TVSC Arsenal went undefeated and did not give up a goal with wins over Cobras FC of Texas
2-0, Banat SC of Arizona 3-0 and CCV Stars of Arizona 1-0 in the tournament semifinal.
Congratulations to the Tri Valley SC Arsenal for their outstanding effort in Las Vegas!

Player/Family Commitment!
As the Club prepares to kickoff the NorCal Premier League and NorCal Cup competition, it is very important that all players honor and fulfill the commitment made when the team selection process was completed in early Spring. This holds true for our families as well.
Team training, tournaments and games are vital to our teams' overall development and success. Consistent attendance is very important to all team functions, as it allows the TVSC coaching staff to fully implement the club’s/team’s developmental objectives both to the individual player and the team.
The club does realize that on occasion, players miss a training session, game or team function because of a family matter or unavoidable circumstances. However, for the preseason and fall this should be the exception not the rule.
Please note, if your child continues to miss training, games and/or team events, it will effect their development and playing time. In addition, if your child continues to miss team events without reasonable explanation, your child may be dropped from the team and face non selection in 2011.
Please reference the TVSC Multi Sport Policy and the Team Protocol Policy for more information.

Developing your Child…
Although there are many misconceptions out in the marketplace as it relates to children and their development in sports and other organized activities, there is one true and undeniable fact that all experts agree – for a child to fully develop in their chosen sport or extra curricular activity, there must be consistent parental support and individual dedication by the child to mastering the skills required to play the game or instrument.
It is equally important that the desire to become proficient must come from the child, not the parent! The parent’s role is to support, encourage and guide their children as they strive to improve their skill set. It is not to satisfy the parents desire to win or to become the best!
The TVSC Coaching Staff highly recommends to their players, that they work individually outside the team training session to improve their technical skills. We also encourage players to meet in small neighborhood groups and play the game without any adult supervision. By doing so, they will become more proficient with the ball, they will learn to demonstrate more individual creativity, and their confidence level and enjoyment of playing the game will soar to new levels.
Some suggestions for your kids – encourage your child to become a good juggler of the ball – keep track of their progress – post it on the refrigerator for all to see, have them show you their feints, have them work on their ball striking by working against a wall with both feet, get a small goal or set up a makeshift goal and have them shoot with both feet while in the backyard. Ask them to show you what they have learned after their training sessions. Be supportive at all times!

Coaching from the Sidelines!
As our teams prepare for the upcoming fall season, a friendly reminder! Please do not give direction in any way, shape or form to your child during training or games. The Tri Valley Soccer Club has been very fortunate that the majority of our membership has followed this protocol consistently through out their association with our club. However, recently we have witnessed a spike in this activity particularly with our youngest teams.
We would ask everyone to adhere to the TVSC Code of Conduct and refrain from any communication that could be considered directional in nature in all games and training sessions.
Support the coaching staff and your children with positive encouragement and refrain from any negativity towards the opponents and game officials. Parents or spectators that do not adhere to this policy will be asked to leave the venue or risk having your child removed from the game.

2010 Future Stars U7 - U8 Program Overview
The TVSC Future Stars Program offers U7 & U8 children the opportunity to play soccer in a supportive and rewarding environment. We put an emphasis on skill development & creativity by providing players with professional soccer training conducted by our highly regarded coaching staff. Through age appropriate exercises and small-sided games, Future Star players learn basic fundamentals & proper technical execution at an early age while still having fun. The Future Stars Program provides an optimal learning environment which fosters both player development and character development. For those serious about learning the game in a fun & safe environment, Future Stars is the alternative to parent-coached recreational soccer leagues.
The program meets 3 times per week, twice for training & once for small-sided (3v3 or 4v4) games using small goals. The small-sided games help players develop at an accelerated rate with more touches on the ball and have more opportunities to make decisions through more involved playing time. Children U8 and younger should not play soccer in an 8v8 format on a large field. Aside from the “pressure” of referee whistles and “fans” shouting from the sidelines, the strength and skill level required for a larger field at this age places too much of a premium on strength and positional organization over individual skill development.

A Letter from the Director of Coaching
Competitive soccer tryouts are right around the corner and contrary to popular belief there are no secrets to success. Players who have a positive attitude and an ability to distinguish themselves from others by demonstrating a higher level of skill with the ball, will always show well to coaches who can recognize talent. Similarly, those who can demonstrate a high level of athleticism or specific physical attributes, such as great pace or size, will likely catch the eye of those making the decisions at tryouts. In the latter case, those gifted athletes should show some technical prowess or potential and, at minimum, the desire and discipline to work to improve technically so they don’t fade away in future seasons when they can no longer rely on sheer athleticism.
While identifying players, good or bad, requires a keen eye for detail, it is possible that coaches could overlook quality players in the tryout process. Knowing this, it becomes critically important for players to stand out and demonstrate their strengths during the tryout. Not particularly skilled or dominant in any specific area? The solution is to work hard, not only at the tryout, but in advance. Prepare yourself by working with a ball on a daily basis so your touch improves and you do show well come tryout time. If training alone gets boring, go play small-sided game with friends or family. Regardless of your skill level, make it obvious that you enjoy playing the game, work as hard as you can and make as much of a positive impact on the game as possible.
At Tri Valley Soccer Club we are focusing our energy on developing technically gifted players who love to play the game and seek constant improvement. While we encourage healthy competition and a desire to win, this is not our primary focus in the youngest age groups. Our philosophy remains that through quality professional training (U6 and up) our players will develop proper technique, be more creative and have confidence with the ball at their feet, all of which play a key role in player, team and club success at later competitive stages.
If you would like to be a part of the best training environment in the area I encourage you to register on-line for our upcoming tryouts. I look forward to seeing you at the Tri Valley Soccer Club tryouts later this month!

A Friendly Reminder to all Families and Fans!
Please remember the TVSC “Code of Conduct” that clearly requires that there be “No Coaching” from the sideline at any time!
To a credit to all of our families, the behavior on the sidelines this season has been very good. However, recently there has been an increase in the instances of parents giving or shouting directions to their children during games. This behavior can be very detrimental to the development of all of the children and often results in indecision and distraction for the players on the field.
Please respect the TVSC Code of Conduct by encouraging your children, not directing or coaching them! Leave the coaching to the coach and all will benefit!
Thank you for your support of this policy!

Tri Valley SC U10 Boys Team Inter Wrap Up Spring Play!
New beginnings are usually filled with hope and promise, and the formation of the 2009 Under-10 boy’s team, Tri Valley SC Inter, is no exception. Comprised of players who share a passion for the game, the Inter roster represents a variety of nationalities and unique blend of cultures, that have helped create a magnificent environment on and off the field.
The club has been successful in providing Team Inter with a training environment that emphasizes a strong technical foundation and creativity. Players are continually improving and demonstrating their skill and creativity in training and games. As the summer and fall seasons approach, lifelong friendships will be forged, skills will be improved and games will be won and lost, while the team continues to build on its success from spring.
While players and coaches are ultimately accountable for a team’s development, much of this team’s success can be attributed to the Inter families and their support of the club’s player development philosophy. It is rare that an entire parent group understands and agrees with the process of true player development versus the win at all cost mentality. This support helps foster an environment that truly focuses on long-term player development and is in the best interest of each player.
If the steady development Team Inter has seen over the first few months of training is any indication of future play, there is no doubt that the boys will exceed expectations for years to come.
